Spiced Chai is properly known as Masala Chai which originated in India hundreds of years ago. Believe it or not, Chai has been consumed in India since the 1800's!

In India, Chai means Tea and the word Masala defines a combination of herbs and spices that are commonly used in Indian dishes as well as in Ayurverdic Herbal Medicine.

Drinking Masala Chai produces a warm soothing effect and a wonderfully calming aspect on the body.

I have never been all that impressed with chai blends. If I want chai, I usually make my own. I always keep a wide variety of whole spices around, so it is not hard to do, and the difference in freshness is worth the extra effort.

Well, today I think I have finally tasted a loose chai that is practically indistinguishable from homemade: Rooibos Masala Chai from Yogic Chai. The cinnamon and cloves are potent, the dried bits of ginger lively, and the green cardamom smells like I just crushed it myself. The rooibos makes a nice base, not quite as robust as Assam, but flavorful enough to stand up to the spices. I served it with raw sugar and milk.
