Rwanda has had quite a remarkable turnaround after years of conflict and the horrific genocide in 1994. As the nation began rebuilding in the late 1990s, agriculture, and in particular the coffee industry, received increased attention and investment, and washing stations (coffee wet mills) can now be found throughout the country. Lush, vibrant, and immaculately clean, this beautiful country is nicknamed “Land of a Thousand Hills.” This is the second year of Cafe Grumpy working with the renowned family-owned coffee company Bufcafe. Based in the Nyamagabe region, the operation is run by Epiphanie Mukashyaka with the help of her two sons Sam and Aloys. Last year we purchased coffee from the Remera washing staton, which was established in 2003. This year their lot comes from the newer Nyarusiza station, which became operational in 2006. Four thousand farmers deliver to Nyarusiza station, where coffee undergoes a 12-14 hour fermentation process, followed by a secondary 24-hour soak. After soaking, the coffee is sorted and dried on raised beds which promote even drying. Unlike many other producing countries in East Africa who have introduced new coffee cultivars, Rwanda has by and large held onto older, classic varieties. This lot is 100% Bourbon, grown between 1700 and 2000 masl.
